Fish River Lodge - Activities

Canyon Day Hike (Full Day)

Only from April to September
Our guide will help you navigate ‘jelly legs’ gorge from the rim to the upper canyon below.  After traversing the rock strewn plains there is a further descent to permanent rock-pools in the river.  A cool refreshing swim through the craggy gorge sets you well and truly in the heart of the canyon.  A picnic lunch is served before returning back to the Lodge.

Canyon Day Hike (Half Day)
A safari vehicle will collect hikers from the rock pools and take them back to the Lodge.

Departure time will vary according to the season for this 8 – 10 hour hike.
|Trainers/hiking boots & backpacks are essential.

Canyon Day Drive

This is the only access route by vehicle anywhere in the Fish River Canyon. As you journey into the depths of the canyon, you will witness first hand millions of years of geological upheaval when the earth’s continents separated and a tectonic shift created the canyon.  Petrified rippled mud and glacial deposits, dramatic fault lines, rough limestone, shiny quartzite are but a few of the features you will see along the way.  Guides will point out evidence of rhino that once navigated the gorges and pairs of territorial Klipspringers as they feast on succulents.  The drive ends at the permanent rock pools. Lunch will be served before heading back to the Lodge. The excursion is approximately 7 hours.

Departure time from the lodge – After an early breakfast between 06h00 – 07h00. | Minimum 2 guests per excursion - Max 9 per vehicle.
Children under 12 are discounted at 50% of adult rate.

Canyon Fat Bikes

Six fat tire bikes are available for guests and ideal for the rocky terrain.

Morning Cycling Excursion
The 22km guided cycling excursion takes you along the rim of the canyon with a loop back down washes and rocky outcrops interspersed with quiver trees and back to the Lodge.

Duration:  ± 3 hours 30 minutes
Helmets, water and snack packs provided.

Sundowner Cycling Excursion
This 10km cycling excursion takes you along the rim of the canyon to the designated sundowner spot where you will be rewarded with a drink and snacks as you watch the sun set.  You will cycle back to the Lodge to freshen up before dinner.

Helmets, water, drink and snack provided.

Canyon Rim Walks

These easy un-guided walks from the lodge along the rim of the canyon are best taken early in the morning and late afternoon when the canyon shadows and colours are at their most dramatic. Both trails offer a chance to have a closer look at the interesting plant and bird life and to experience the vastness of the skies and the landscape.  There are few places left in the world where you can truly be alone and have clean air to breathe and time to reflect. Alone on the rim of the canyon – seize the moment!

Guided walks are also available on request where more detailed information will be shared with you.

Rim Hiking

Rim to River - 2 Day Hiking Trail

Our new Rim to River Hiking Trail is a dream come true for hikers wanting to experience one of the world’s most popular hiking destinations – the Fish River Canyon – but with the added comfort of slack packing. This trail immerses you directly into the dramatic landscape from the rim of the canyon - down to the Fish River below and back up to the rim again.

An experienced guide will point out the intriguing desert adapted Quiver tree standing solitary against a fascinating 500 million year-old geological back drop. Or you might want to stop and watch a herd of the rare Hartman’s Zebra as they disappear into a side canyon with black eagles soaring above? On hot days you can cool off in permanent rock pools and swim between the rock faces whilst a Pied Kingfisher watches from a ledge above.

Camp Eternity and Camp Edge are as evocative as their names suggest.  Carefully designed stone gabion shelters merge with the landscape, yet stand sentinel over the canyon and beyond – a mesmerising palette of purples, oranges and terracotta.  Meals are served under a billion stars and when you retire to the comfort of your tent – nature’s elements, either harsh or heavenly, are close by and will share the night with you.

The 2–day Rim to River Hike includes:
An experienced guide with a maximum of 10 guests per booking.
Departure from Fish River Lodge at 16h00 (Arrival at lodge 14h00 – 14h30)
Night 1 at Camp Eternity and Night 2 at Camp Edge.
Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner and drinks for the duration of the hike.
